2-22-07 The Hope "Colossians 1:1-14"

Memory Verse: Colossians 1:5: For the hope which is laid up for you in heaven, whereof ye heard before in the word of the truth of the gospel.

There was good evidence that the faith of the Colossian Christians was genuine. It was demonstrated in their love for all the saints. Watching the lives of these Christians one concluded they were real. Their earthly walk gave testimony that they were headed for heaven.

The Pulpit Commentary says of our text: "What the apostle hears of 'the faith and love' of the Colossian brethren moves him to give thanks for 'the hope which is in store for them in heaven.' Of that hope this faith and love are to him a pledge and an earnest, even as the 'seal of the Spirit.' "

People who are going to heaven ought to love one another while on earth. Some expect to love others in heaven but they don't seem to be practicing here below.

To live above with saints in love
Will be eternal glory;
T live below with saints we know
Is quite another story.

But love for one another is the identifying mark of those who are citizens of heaven: "We know that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren. He that loveth not his abideth in death . . . And this is his commandment, That we should believe on the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as he gave us commandment" (1 John 3:14,23)

If love for others identifies those who are born again and are going to heaven, will others know your destination by your present attitude?

If no, it's time for a change!
