2-16-07 His Ascension "Acts 1:1-11"

Memory Verse: Acts 1:11: Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven.

Jesus ascended into heaven. He had finished His work of redemption on the cross. He had risen from the grave as He had promised. He had commissioned His disciples to carry the good news to the world. Now He was returning to the Father . . . to heaven.

Why?

Why did Jesus not stay on earth after He had paid for our sins? Why did He not establish His Kingdom on earth at that time?

Because He had work to do in heaven . . . the work of intercession. Though saved from sin, the converted are frail and need His continual intercession. "Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession from them" (Hebrews 7:25).

Do you fear to receive Christ because you think yourself too weak to live the Christian life? Lay aside your fears and leave your tomorrows with Jesus. He is our advocate with the Father: "My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous" (1 John 2:1). "For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus" (1 Timothy 2:5).

Perhaps you have failed God so grievously that you are about to despair. You no longer feel worthy to continue in Christian service. You are about to resign your offices at the church. Flee to your advocate . . . the Lord Jesus. Confess your sins and failures to Him.

You have an advocate in heaven!
